What guise of usefulness? I just find it purely entertaining.

Heaven is a useful incentive to compliance for those who are either simple minded or just plain greedy for their own salvation. Religion (along with patriotism) is the best way to get people to go along with immoral ideas (bigotry, intolerance, etc.), and commit actions en masse that, stripped of their patriotic or religious costuming, would be baldy, unforgivably atrocious (wars, torture, persecution, etc.).

Well said. However, I feel the Christian bible is hardly a voice for morality. The old testament, especially: Stoning adulterers? Killing disobedient children? Selling your daughter for sex and slavery? I would hope that in this day, we have matured beyond that questionable morality.
