PETA is a bunch of hypocritical idiots. They kill the vast majority of dogs and cats in there shelters. Apparently they feel they are better off dead than alive as someone's pet.
During all of 2008, PETA found homes for just seven pets. Just seven animals -- out of the 2,216 it took in. (2,124 where euthanize) Since 1998, PETA has opted to “put down” 21,339 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding homes for them.
Basically they seem to consider it an unfair performance enhancer, like steroids or blood doping. Any one considered an "elite runner" (competing for championships and/or cash prizes) are not allowed to use them, but all other runners are.

But if you don't feed them, can you not argue that you are harming them by withholding food and potentially letting them starve.
