Should medical malpractice verdicts be capped so injured people have to suffer twice as much?

As a follow-up to my earlier comments. I do feel that some controls should be enforced with the pay-out of any money to the injured. I know of a case 10 years back that was not covered in any newscast or newspaper. There was a man that was to undergo surgery very near his spinal cord. The Doctor informed him and his family of the risks. As it turned out, his spinal core was nicked and the man had permanent damage. The Doctor was sued for malpractice and the injured man was awarded an amount for $25 million dollars. The relatives of the man took the money and purchased new cars, boats, went on shopping sprees and trips to Vegas. Five years later, they all went bankrupt and the man is on State support. Food for thought.
